Requesting an LTI for Canvas

At times, faculty may request the implementation of software into their course via LTI, such as a new publisher tool. There exists a specific process that must be followed to integrate the LTI into Taft College's Canvas instance.

The person who desires to implement an LTI software in Taft College's Canvas instance needs to email [email protected] with the following information:

  1. First and Last Name
  2. What is your role at TC (Faculty, Staff, Administrator, or Student)?
  3. Which LTI app(s) are you requesting integration for? Please list any specific tools or platforms you want integrated with Canvas.
    1. Please also include a link to the *Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT). You can usually find the VPAT by Googling the name of the product followed by VPAT
      1. For example, Google "Respondus Lockdown Browser VPAT"
      2. A VPAT is a document that provides a standardized format for vendors to report on the accessibility of their information and communication technology (ICT) products and services. It outlines how well a product or service conforms to the Section 508 standards for accessibility, as well as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). VPATs help organizations assess the accessibility of ICT products and make informed procurement decisions to ensure accessibility for users with disabilities.*

  4. How do you anticipate the requested LTI integration(s) will enhance your teaching or work? In other words, what is the purpose of the LTI tool?

  5. On a scale of 1 to 5, how important do you consider the requested LTI integration(s) for your teaching or work needs (1 being not important. 5 being extremely important)?
  6. Are there any specific features or functionalities you want the requested LTI(s) to provide?

Process

  • Needs Assessment:
Conversations with various Stakeholders, the DE Director, The DE Integrated Technology Support Technician, and other faculty members.
  • Vendor Evaluation:
Consider factors such as compatibility with Canvas, cost (whose department will cover the overall cost), user interface, support services, and compliance with privacy, security standards, and determine if the software/tool is fully accessible.
  • Compatibility check:
Ensure that the new software is compatible with Canvas and supports the Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) standard. Confirm that the software aligns with the technical specifications and requirements of Canvas to facilitate seamless integration.
  • Vendor Communication:
The DE Integrated Technology Support Technician must Configure authentication mechanisms, establish secure communication protocols, and ensure that user data is handled in compliance with privacy regulations.
  • Board Approval:
If the new tool requires a contract, then that contract requires Board approval.
  • Faculty training:
Workshops will be offered (usually in the form of Skill-Up’s), documentation, and support resources to ensure that educators are proficient in utilizing the integrated tool within Canvas.
