Kelly was not available to provide an update on the Workforce Workgroup and Developmental Services Master Plan; however, Devin shared one funding option to support work related to developing a local DSS-Independent Facilitator Certificate at Taft College might be Adult Education.

Devin also provided several updates on programs in the queue, and upcoming programs.

EMR: Recommended by Kern County Fire Department to provide EMR training to firefighters.

Phlebotomy: Dignity and Adventist Health recommended the college offer. Kaiser is willing to take all our students for work-based learning hours. It would consist of one class (CPT 2) that can be used at hospitals. CPT 3 will not be offered.

MLT: Teaches students how to code, put people in system, hematology, and blood bank related knowledge. Many hospitals have these positions. Students can become nationally certified and recognized as lab techs in other states, but not in California.

CNA: Consists of one course, certified via Consumer Affairs. This program is a little more complicated to establish.

Speech Pathology: To be an aid requires a certificate; to be an assistant requires an associates degree. Adam is working on the program and will be submitting to curriculum for approval, soon.

Nursing (RN): The college is still in the process of hiring a director and an assistant, and four facilities are willing to take on Taft College nursing students for clinical rotations.

Paramedics: The college must have a director, and paperwork to make this happen is being worked on right now. The director will help screen incoming applicants for the program, and the current HLED 1535 instructor, Nick Lidgett, can also assist with screening/selection. The college does not have to wait for final accreditation and can begin offering the program once state approval has been received. Grant monies have been secured to buy equipment and pay the director’s salary for one year.

Medical Assistant: Courses have been approved, and CORs are being submitted for approval. The goal for full approval is Jan/Feb. After that, the program can be registered with the state, and it would take 2-3 semesters to complete the program (only cert options, no degree).

The college also has an MOU with Westside Healthcare to support work-based learning.

Three other program recommendations have been presented and will be coming forward at the next Allied Health Advisory Meeting: Respiratory Therapy, Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA), and Sonography.
