Information Items

Devin will be attending the CTE convening in Bakersfield on October 10th from 8:30-12:30 at the CTE center. This is based on the California State Plan for CTE framework for alignment across high school and higher education to support a skilled workforce. Vicki shared concerns about the CTE grants, and whether Taft College has the capacity to make it happen well. There are great ideas, but a lot of work to make it happen. Vicki is not opposed, but concerned the work will fall on the CTE Committee. Taking on another huge project, with a lot of other major things happening, might be something to think about. If there are too many things, it’s hard to do any of them well.

Updates

Darcy shared ‘updates’ will be a standing agenda item for any updates, in particular updates from Michelle and Devin based upon their CTE related roles.

Devin shared updates related to the creation of a job description and extra duty assignment for a Paramedics program narrative and COR development. There is grant money available. Hall Ambulance will be donating an ambulance to the program next year, and there are many partners on board, including West Side Urgent Care to help with immunizations and Pro Safety & Rescue with internships. Devin also shared he and Leslie are working on Medical Assisting as well. Registered Nursing is in the very beginning stages of being explored, and the feasibility thereof.

Kristy shared there are no updates to the bachelor’s in Dental Hygiene degree. Vicki believes coursework is still pending approval at Chancellor’s Office.

Kelly shared that she discussed updating the Disability Services (DS) brochure with Alissa Tweedy at the CTE Advisory Meeting last spring. It has been drafted and printed. A concern was brought up regarding the DS catalog language and making it more clear in the verbiage that students can substitute a course in the major since only six classes are required but seven classes are offered.

Vicki shared Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) is still being discussed with the advisory committee as well as necessary next steps to update the narrative and CORs. Devin shared he has also met with Terry Davis on this project and the process that needs to be followed for potential funding opportunities.

New Business

  1. Committee Charter & 2023-2024 Goals DISC/ACTION

The committee reviewed the CTE Committee Charter. Kelly recommended an update under ‘Membership Representation’ (2) Up to seven Academic Senate Members with a preference for…

The committee discussed one possible goal: Understand funding sources to support CTE curriculum/course/program development. The committee will further discuss this and any other goals of interest at the next meeting.

Other
