Taft College Faculty Collective Bargaining Committee (TCFCBC) Update

Academic Calendar 2014-2015

President Diane Jones reported that a consensus was reached on the 2014-2015 academic calendar. No major changes occurred. The task force looked at the possibility of taking Thanksgiving week off, but there was a significant domino effect. This calendar will now go before the Board of Trustees.

Adjunct Salaries

President Diane Jones reported what was discussed in TCFCBC. She reminded the association of recent troubles attracting adjunct instructors. An English class was cancelled recently because an adjunct couldn’t be found. A consensus was reached that would allow: 1) adjuncts to be placed higher than step 1 on the salary schedule with prior community college teaching or professional experience, 2) step advancement for non-bachelors degree instructors, and 3) and an agreement to look at adjunct salaries later in 2013. Diane and HR Director Jana Peters will craft language and bring it back to TCFBC. Following consensus, Diane will bring it back to the Faculty Association for ratification. Craig Johnson reported that the state average for adjunct salaries is approximately $70/hour. Diane stated that Superintendent/President Dena Maloney is being cautious, and is curious how salaries will be affected by state COLA, the Frey report and the 50% law. A lengthy discussion ensued in which members asked that we look at adjunct office hours, step acceleration for current adjuncts in addition to initial hires, and high school teaching experience.

Board of Trustees Meeting

President Diane reported that she did not attend the January Board of Trustees meeting over the break. She did attend the December meeting and was able to discuss adjunct faculty rates in closed session. Diane reminded the association that the Board is very pro-faculty, and asked that we send her information so she can report faculty activities to the Board.

Campus Security and Response Plan

President Diane Jones reported that the District is making progress in this area, but we still need a plan. This task has fallen through the cracks as it was passed down from former Vice Presidents Willy Duncan, John Griffith and Ron Errea. Darcy Bogle reported that six members from counseling have supported efforts to help students deal with the shooting at Taft High. Chris Chung-Wee stated that in lack of a plan from the district, we should all think about our individual plan for an emergency. Vicki Herder stated that a TV station reported one of our students was reluctant to return to TC as a result of the shooting at Taft High.

Other

Happy Birthday Bill Devine.

Adjournment

The meeting was adjourned at 12:47 pm.
