 PUBLIC COMMENTARY

 APPROVAL OF MINUTES: From the May 19, 2024, Curriculum & General Education meeting

On a motion by K. Bandy, seconded by J. Rangel-Escobedo and unanimously carried by all, the May 19 minutes were approved.

TRAINING

  1. Changes in Title 5 language
  2. 55060-55062, 55063, 55001, 55001.5, 55002

Vicki gave the annual required training. Training included Title V updates. A brief discussion was had regarding the difference between Ed. Code & Title V. V. Jacobi shared that Ed. Code is State-wide whereas Title V is at the campus level.

  1. Cal-GETC Standards 1.2

The group discussed the most current version of the CalGETC. The minor change is the COMM number going from 1507 & 1511 to 1607 & 1611. One of the most significant changes is Area E no longer part of the pattern. New courses will be coming through this semester. Division Chairs will consider reviewing their curriculum during comprehensive program review.

  1. COR template form from Chancellor’s Office

An update on the AB 1111 common course template was given. The committee discussed various parts of the new common course process. Vicki shared a couple of examples as well as the timeline provided by the State. The first batch is due to the Chancellors Office by December 2, 2024.

  1. Decolonizing language

Vicki shared a presentation regarding decolonizing language in curriculum. Vicki presented this topic at previous meetings and is working on a process. She hopes to share it with the committee at a future meeting.

The committee reviewed the new Health Education & Medical Assisting curriculum. The items were approved by the TC Board on June 12, 2024.

On a motion by B. Devine, seconded by K. Bandy and unanimously carried by all, the course revision was approved.

Math/Science Division

No action was taken on the Distance Ed./Learning proposals. They were approved by the Board on June 12, 2024.

DISCUSSION ITEMS:

  1. List of OER courses
  2. Oja shared copies of Ed. Code 66406. She briefly discussed the Ed. Code requirements and asked, what role the C & GE committee plays in the OER process. K. Bandy explained that textbook changes do not have to come through curriculum. The cost of textbooks was briefly discussed. Students may hold back from enrolling in certain courses because of the cost of textbooks.
  1. CCN AB 1111 rollout of 6 courses

A brief update on AB 1111 was given. September is Common Course numbering month.

  1. AB 928 deadlines

Vicki gave an update on the various AB 928 deadlines. Among those deadlines is June 1st, 2025 where colleges must certify that their ADTs are updated with CalGETC.

  1. AB 1705 impact of Calculus I (MATH 2100)

The MATH department is working on updating their curriculum.

  1. Program sheets-Program Mapper Program
  2. Lopez briefly shared the campus’ progress on Strategic Enrollment Management.
  3. Credit for Prior Learning procedures

The Faculty Association is currently working on the process. Information will be shared as it becomes available.

  1. Environmental Justice Green Leaf

Vicki briefly shared the Environmental Green Leaf project with the committee. The project identifies “Green” courses by putting a green leaf by the catalog description. TC will consider doing the same.

  1. Charter Update

The C & GE Charter will discussed at the September C & GE meeting.

  1. Flexible course hours on Course Outline of Record

Flexible hours on courses was briefly discussed. Vicki told the committee that most of the California Community Colleges have flexible hours on their course outlines. Having flexible hours would give faculty members the option to teach a three-unit course in 48 or 54 hours. Vicki asked the Chairs to discuss it in their division meetings to see what kind of feedback they get. It will be discussed at a future meeting.
